We’ve heard input from out of state “standards experts” and in state anti-public education leaders who have criticized the standards written by Oklahoma educators. But what about those Oklahoma educators themselves?
Our state Teacher of the Year Shawn Sheehan of Norman, for one, has written a letter to the Oklahoma State Department of Education supporting the standards.
The common theme throughout the mathematics standards that is most beneficial is the focus on solving real-world problems in addition to mathematical problems. It is critical that we have students who not only understand computation and calculations, but understand how to apply them to the world around them. These standards will build mathematic innovators in our state.
