We think it sounds good for the Speaker to say he’s going to cut common education no more than 5 percent. The problem though is that our legislative leaders have no control over the free-fall in oil prices, and clearly did not have the foresight to invest in public education when we were flush with money.
We are not convinced that they will be able to limit the education cuts without damaging other state services that we need just as much, such as mental health services. So, the Speaker’s grandstanding sounds good, but we are exercising our critical thinking skills as we wait for the other shoe to drop.
Thursday, the Oklahoma Speaker of the House, Jeff Hickman, drew a line in the sand – the House will not support education cuts greater than five percent.
