House Speaker Jeff Hickman, R-Fairview, announced today in reference to SB 1187 that he would “lay this bill over,” meaning that it’s dead for this legislative session.
Senate Bill 1187 originally sought to deregulate public schools under certain conditions. Deregulation could have enabled schools to ignore laws requiring minimum teacher pay, participation in the retirement system and other benefits. However, a last-minute committee substitution turned it into an End-Of-Instruction exam exemption effort.
The bill was on the schedule to be heard today in the House Appropriations and Budget Committee meeting.
Update: According to Professional Oklahoma Educators Executive Director Ginger Tinney, Rep. Jason Nelson will not be running for reelection.
