What’s more surprising than a balanced budget coming from our legislature that’s not off the backs of state agencies? How about the Senate Education Committee voting against Loveless’s SB 37 for requiring 5-day school weeks. Especially when we all know how embarrassing this has been for our poor, dear governor.
While there are pros and cons on the 4-day school week debate, in the end, it should be left to the local school boards to decide. Especially when faced with the budget crisis our schools have been dealt (thanks to the state not being able to adequately fund state agencies), things are tough enough without having to deal with more mandates and paperwork to beg for a 4-day week, if that’s what a school district feels they must do.
But then it seems Loveless is out to set a record for unnecessary and unfunded mandates for Oklahoma’s public schools. At least this one isn’t going anywhere.
